The popularizer of science died at 91 on Friday, 12 October 2023. His son, Benoit Reeves, announced on social media but didn’t mention the cause of his death.
“All my family join me in the pain of letting you know that our dear father has gone to join the stars this day, Friday, 13th October 2023,” he wrote on Facebook.
No other details, including the cause of death, were not disclosed. There’s also no information as to whether the late Hubert Reeves was ill or had an accident.
Following his demise, tributes have been paid to the Canadian-French astrophysicist and science popularizer via social networks.
“Today, Quebec loses a renowned astrophysicist. Hubert Reeves found the words to help us understand humanity and infinity. He leaves today as he came, as stardust,” said Quebec Premier Francois Legault.
“He was a beacon for humanity. He will remain a star in the firmament of the world’s greats, a wise man and a great Quebecer,” added Joel Arseneau.
During Reeves’s long career in Quebec, the U.S., and Europe, he received several awards, including the Albert Einstein and Samuel de Champlain prizes.
Recognized by the Order of Canada and Officer of the Ordre national du Québec, and holder of eight honorary doctorates, Reeves is considered one of the greatest astrophysicists of his generation.
He authored over 40 books and hundreds of publications in specialized journals. Reeves is credited with several shows and popular science books, including “Patience dans l’azur” and “Poussière d’étoile.”
From 1960 to 1964, he taught physics at the Université de Montréal and worked as an adviser to NASA. He worked as a Director of Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) since 1965.
